Late to the Academic Game

January 1, 2010

I publish in academic journals, hold forth in front of classes of higher learning and also write in the Wild West of new media while rocking and rolling with breaking news in my mainstream media gig.

Why do I think people covet my situation? That’s what I hear when I listen really hard to what they say.

I started noticing this a year or so ago when I attended a panel discussion at a prestigious journalism academic conference. The incredibly accomplished academics on the panel were bemoaning the long hours they put in and the personal lives they gave up to write books and articles that weren’t widely read and didn’t seem to make much of a difference.
