Head in the Clouds — A Good Way to Spend the Day

But as we floated along and they looked up at the clouds on the perfect summer day and began to find the shapes of dogs and ghosts, and when they wanted to paddle over to the secret cove they spotted from afar, I knew the canoe had them — even if for just a short while. My husband, too, saw a shape in the clouds even though he had thought he had outgrown that talent long before.

The old canoe was probably a bit pleased as well. It was back in the water on a summer day with a family on vacation, reliving its past just as I was reliving mine, remembering mine and my kids’ younger days finding shapes in the clouds as we looked up at the sky — no cajoling necessary.
